Only by doing this will violations of international human rights law and abuse of human rights be stopped. It also called for holding Israel responsible for ‘war crimes’ committed by its army in Gaza.

Which country brought the proposal in UN?

According to the report of Hindustan Times, the proposal against Israel was presented by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). OIC has been trying for a long time to prove Israel guilty for the war going on in Gaza. Why did India distance itself from the proposal?
Along with India, Georgia, Japan and the Netherlands were among the countries that did not participate in the voting on the resolution. People with knowledge of the matter said that India has earlier also distanced itself from resolutions on the human rights situation in the Palestinian territory. This time too, boycotting the proposal was in accordance with its traditional stance.

However, India also supported three resolutions brought in support of the Palestinian people in the Human Rights Council. This includes a resolution supporting the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people, a resolution expressing concern over human rights in the occupied Syrian Golan, and a resolution condemning Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, including the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.

India abstained at the UN Human Rights Council on Friday from voting on a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and also demanding that Israel immediately lift its illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip. The Council adopted a draft resolution on ‘The human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and the responsibility to ensure accountability and justice’, with 28 votes in favour. Six votes were cast against it and 13 countries abstained. India surprised everyone by voting in favor of Palestine on an issue.

India surprised everyone by voting in favor of Palestine
India had indirectly supported Israel in one of the two UN resolutions. But the same India on Friday voted in favor of the draft resolution of the United Nations Human Rights Council in which the “inalienable right” of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to an independent Palestinian state, has been confirmed. The Geneva-based council passed a draft resolution on ‘The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination’ in which 42 member countries, including India, voted in favor of it. Of the 47 council members, two countries, the United States and Paraguay, voted against the resolution, while Albania, Argentina and Cameroon abstained.

What is written in the proposal
The resolution reaffirms “the inalienable, permanent and absolute right of the Palestinian people to live with freedom, justice and dignity, and their right to self-determination, including the right to an independent Palestinian state.” It stresses the need for a just, comprehensive and lasting peaceful solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict in accordance with international law and other internationally accepted standards, including all relevant United Nations resolutions. It calls on Israel to immediately end its occupation of the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and to remove and prevent any obstruction to Palestine’s political independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
