Israel killed Hezbollah’s top commander Ibrahim Aqeel while attacking a building in Beirut on Friday. Ever since the confirmation of Ibrahim Aqeel’s death, he has been discussed in the news. He was on the US and Israel’s hit list and a bounty of 7 million dollars (58 crores) was placed on him.
Everyone is curious to know how Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqeel became such a big enemy of the US and Israel? Actually, Ibrahim was working with Hezbollah since the 1980s and was one of its founding members. In the last 40 years, he has done many big things to increase Hezbollah’s supremacy inside Lebanon. Ibrahim expanded Hezbollah from a militia group in Lebanon to areas like politics, social service.
It started in 1983
The year 1983 was a turning point in the violence in the Middle East, when suicide attacks in Lebanon’s capital Beirut killed more than 360 people, most of whom were American soldiers. The US had blamed Ibrahim Aqeel, one of Hezbollah’s main military commanders, for these attacks. Since then, the US and Israeli intelligence agencies were looking for Ibrahim, but for 40 years he did not fall into their hands and continued to carry out his mission from behind the scenes.
What happened in the 1983 attack?
In the same Beirut where the Hezbollah commander died, in 1983, a suicide bomber drove a Mercedes truck full of explosives into the US army barracks, after which a massive explosion killed 241 American soldiers and injured more than 100. This attack was the biggest blow to the US at that time. Such a large number of its soldiers were killed in a single day.
Many changes in security
After this incident, many European countries including the US strengthened the security of their military bases and offices abroad. The US embassy in Beirut is now like an armed fortress and the US ambassador moves under a heavy security cover.
In 1982, the US and European countries deployed peacekeepers in Beirut with the aim of bringing stability in the region, but with time, they themselves became the center of violence and many attacks were made against them. After which the US had to withdraw these soldiers from Beirut.
After Ibrahim’s involvement not only in these attacks but also in many kidnappings and other operations, the US put him on the list of global terrorists and placed a bounty of 7 million dollars on his head.
