Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself confirmed that India used Israeli weapons in this operation, including the Barak-8 missile system and Harpy drones. Netanyahu said that our weapons have been used at the ground level and they performed well in Operation Sindoor. His statement reflects the depth of the India-Israel defense partnership. This cooperation is not limited to technical supply, but it also includes joint development and technology transfer. DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries together developed the Barak-8, which is an important step towards India’s defense autonomy.
Let us tell you that after Pakistan’s connection came to light in the Pahalgam terrorist attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7. During that time, India attacked terrorist bases located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, in which drones including Brahmos, Barak missiles were also used.
India-Israel joint defence technology
The Barak-8 is a long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) designed to intercept aerial threats such as fighter aircraft, helicopters, anti-ship missiles and UAVs.
Its key features are as follows:
360-degree coverage: Ability to counter threats coming from all four directions.
Multi-target engagement: Ability to attack multiple targets simultaneously.
Range up to 100 km: Facility to intercept the enemy from a distance.
In Operation Sindoor, the Barak-8 was used to intercept Pakistani missiles. It not only intercepted the missiles but also ensured the safety of Indian airspace.
Harpy drone is a weapon to destroy enemy air defence
Harpy is a loitering munition developed to destroy enemy radar systems. Its specialty is that it is fully suitable for SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses) mission.
Main capabilities
Radar-seeking technology: Identify the radiation emitted by the enemy’s radar and attack it.
Automatic target lock: Automatically attack once the target is found.
Long operational period: Ability to remain in the air for 9 hours.
In Operation Sindoor, the Harpy drone cleared the way for the Indian Air Force and missile defense system by disabling the enemy’s radar system.
India-Israel defense partnership and strategic importance
Israel ranks fourth among India’s major arms suppliers. In the last decade, India has imported defense equipment worth about $ 2.9 billion from Israel. This includes radars, UAVs, missile systems and electronic warfare equipment. India buys weapons from many countries of the world. Russia is at the top in this. India buys weapons worth $ 21.8 billion from Russia. Apart from this, arms purchases are made from France, America, Israel: 5.2 billion, 4.5 billion and 2.9 billion dollars respectively. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, India is working on reducing dependence on foreign supplies and increasing indigenous arms manufacturing. Projects like Barak-8 are milestones in this direction.
