S Somnath said – cannot depend on the government for funding
The dialogue session was organized by the Social Welfare Department and Science and Technology Department of the Government of Karnataka. S Somnath said, ‘ISRO’s goal is to serve the country, not to join the battle for supremacy in the field of space. ISRO needs freedom to do what it wants to do.’ He said that independence can be achieved by establishing an ecosystem for commercial opportunities in space technology. The Chairman of ISRO said that missions related to the moon are very expensive. In such a situation, we cannot depend only on the government for funding ISRO.
S. Somnath said – ISRO does a lot more
S. Somnath said that we have to create commercial opportunities for ISRO. If you want to continue it, then the utility of ISRO has to be proved. Otherwise, when we do something, the government will ask us to close it. Regarding this, he said that ISRO does a lot more than space work. Responding to questions, he said that we issue advice for fishermen. We also advise fishermen where to find fish, which place is right for it. With this, fishermen are able to save a lot of diesel required for their boats.
