Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Thursday that the government’s tourism promotion campaigns would be futile if popular tourist destinations remain closed to tourists. Speaking to reporters in Gulmarg, CM Omar said that the recent incident in Pahalgam should not have happened, but he also said that many corrective steps have been taken since then. He said he would speak to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in this regard.

He said, “What happened in Pahalgam should not have happened. Since then, many steps have been taken, but until the closed destinations are reopened, our tourism promotion efforts will be futile. What is the point of spending resources on promoting tourism if they are not open?”

The Chief Minister emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir’s economy is heavily dependent on tourism and warned that closing tourist destinations creates a negative perception about the Valley.

Omar Abdullah expressed concern over restrictions
Omar also expressed disappointment over restrictions that prevented political leaders from offering condolences in some cases. Tourism figures in Kashmir have repeatedly expressed concern over limited access to various resorts, warning that this hinders the influx of domestic and international tourists.

Abdullah, who inaugurated a convention center earlier in the day, said it is expected to boost tourism and create livelihood opportunities for locals.
