Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday personally visited the affected areas after the Jhelum river overflowed in Budgam district. He assured the local people that the government is taking every possible step to prevent such floods in future. Amid the threat in the area due to heavy rains and rising water level of the river, the administration and disaster management team took timely action and shifted about 200 families to safer places.
Taunting the previous governments
The Chief Minister, referring to the 2014 floods, said that the ruling government of that time did not take any concrete steps to keep the valley safe from floods. Omar Abdullah raised the question, “What did you do in the last 11 years? After learning the lesson of 2014, we had prepared a package, under which the carrying capacity of water will be increased in both Jahlum and flood channel through dredging. But, regretfully, it has to be said that today it seems that these 11 years have been wasted.” Assessment of damage and preparation for compensation
The Chief Minister said that he has decided to visit ten districts of Jammu. He said that he has written a letter to the Home Minister requesting that a team be sent to Kashmir so that the damage in the affected areas like Kulgam, Anantnag, Srinagar, Budgam, Anant and Baramulla can be properly assessed. Omar Abdullah said that the affected people should be given proper compensation and a package for this should also be announced by the Center.
Emphasis on government’s preparations
He instructed the officials to speed up the relief work in the flood affected areas and provide all possible help to the affected people. The Chief Minister also said that the administration is fully prepared to deal with such disasters in future.
The local people were worried about the rain and the rising water level of the river. The administration immediately secured the people in relief camps and provided food and drinking water facilities. A sense of relief was seen among the people due to the Chief Minister’s visit and his assurance.
