It is a matter of shame that instead of the Election Commission of India, the Supreme Court has to issue instructions regarding elections in Jammu and Kashmir. These are the words of former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah. He expressed his displeasure over the non-holding of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 and targeted the government. In the year 2019, the Modi government removed the effect of Article 370, after which the local parties have started raising questions on the current government regarding the elections.
In a TV channel programme, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah raised questions on the government and talked about holding assembly elections. In fact, after the removal of Article 370, this state was divided into two union territories, Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh. No elections have been conducted since 2019. Due to non-holding of elections, the opposition parties are upset and are continuously putting pressure on the government to hold elections soon. The Supreme Court had said that assembly elections should be held in Jammu and Kashmir by the end of September.
Said to increase terrorist attacks
Omar Abdullah said during the program that after the removal of Article 370, terrorist attacks have started happening even in those parts of terrorism-free areas. This especially includes Jammu, Rajouri hills and Poonch region. He further said that after all this, support to the separatists continues and hardly a week or two passes without any terrorist attack. He claimed that more Kashmiri Pandits have been killed in targeted attacks under the central government compared to previous governments.
He also discussed about the appeal of the Kashmiri Pandits to the government and said that the Kashmiri Pandits, who were resettled in the valley by their government with government jobs, are now requesting that they be allowed to go back to Jammu. Let it be given. Compared to the last 5 or 10 years, most Kashmiri Pandits now want to leave Kashmir.
In December 2023, the Supreme Court had upheld the decision to remove Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, after which the court had said that Jammu and Kashmir would be given statehood and assembly elections would be held by September 30, 2024.
