Jammu Kashmir Politics: Strongly defending the BJP-led central government’s approach towards Jammu and Kashmir, Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Saturday said the Union Territory has witnessed a dramatic shift in recent years from violence and shutdowns to peace and economic revival.

Speaking at a press conference in Srinagar, Sharma noted the visible change in Srinagar’s downtown, once the epicentre of protests and strikes. “There are no shutdowns now, schools are opening, businesses are open and life is normal. This is the new face of Kashmir,” he said.

‘Centre’s commitment to inclusive growth’

The BJP leader reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to inclusive growth, ensuring that all centrally sponsored schemes continue to benefit every section of society. However, Sharma also took a dig at the National Conference (NC) and accused the party of disrupting assembly proceedings in the crucial last days of the budget session.

“They kept avoiding serious discussions and walked out repeatedly,” he said. He said the NC was attempting to avoid public scrutiny. Sharma minced no words in criticising the past record of the NC and PDP governments, accusing them of allowing miscreants to flourish and failing to effectively implement laws such as the Public Safety Act.

Questions raised over NC’s role

“We took action where they failed. We put disruptive elements in jail and saved lives,” he said. The BJP leader also spoke on the controversial release of separatist Masrat Alam and accused the NC of celebrating the move during Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s government.

On the issue of statehood, Sharma made it clear that its restoration was part of the BJP’s roadmap. “It will happen at the right time, but won’t raising communal slogans inside the assembly speed up the process,” he said.
