The emergency ward of Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, made headlines when a critically ill patient and his two attendants were caught red-handed drinking alcohol inside the ICU ward. This act, which brought shame to the sensitive and serious environment of the hospital, created a stir among patients and their families. It also raised questions about the functioning of the entire medical administration.
According to reports, an accidental patient was admitted to the medical college’s emergency ICU ward. Instead of receiving life-saving medication and care, the patient instead arranged to drink alcohol with his two attendants. Bottles were opened in the middle of the ward, glasses were clinked, and the smell of alcohol, rather than medicine, permeated the hospital air.
Guard Caught Red-Handed
A guard explained that upon noticing this, he took immediate action. The patient and his two attendants were caught red-handed by the medical college’s security guards. Other patients and their relatives in the ward were shocked. The guards apprehended the three and presented them before their superiors. A search revealed liquor bottles, tobacco, and other intoxicants.
Attendants Arrived in Lockup
Upon receiving information about the incident, the Medical College Police Station in-charge arrived at the scene and the two attendants were taken into custody by the police. The patient, due to his condition, was kept in the ICU. Police seized the liquor and paraphernalia recovered from the scene and have launched an investigation. The question now arises: how did the alcohol get into such a tightly monitored ICU?
CMS of the Medical College Issues Clarification
CMS of the Medical College, Dr. Sachin Mahor, confirmed the incident and said that the incident was extremely shameful and unacceptable. He explained that the guards’ vigilance led to the incident, and the individuals consuming the alcohol were immediately handed over to the police. The hospital administration is also investigating how the alcohol entered the hospital premises.
