Jharkhand: Former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren has filed a petition in the High Court against his arrest, which will be heard on February 5. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Hemant Soren on January 31 in the alleged land scam. Hemant Soren had approached the Supreme Court challenging this arrest but his petition was rejected saying that the case should be heard in the High Court first.

The Enforcement Directorate had sent summons to Hemant Soren in the land scam case. However, he did not appear on seven summons. ED finally asked him to tell the time and date so that he could be interrogated. On the eighth summons, he was interrogated at his Ranchi residence. After this, summons were sent once again during which he was taken into custody after interrogation. Hemant Soren was presented in the court from where he was sent to ED remand for 5 days.

Events after Hemant’s arrest
However, Hemant Soren had resigned from the post of CM before his arrest and named Champai Soren as the new CM. Apart from Champai Soren, two other ministers took oath on Friday. After taking oath, Champai Soren now has to conduct the floor test in the assembly. For this, 5th February has been fixed when the floor test will be held in the Assembly. On the other hand, the PMLA court has given permission to Hemant to appear in the floor test. However, his other demand has been rejected. Hemant had demanded from the court that after being interrogated in ED remand, he should be allowed to stay in Birsa Munda jail at night. This was demanded citing security reasons. The court has refused to accept this demand.
