Jharkhand: People in a village in Jamshedpur are in panic. The reason for their panic is a tigress named ‘Zeenat’. This tigress has created an undeclared curfew like situation in many areas of Chakulia block of Jamshedpur for the last four-five days. This tigress has reached Chakulia from Simlipal Tiger Reserve of Odisha. The forest department team has spotted the tigress in Chiyabandi forest, but the attempt to catch her has failed so far.
The tigress is said to be hungry and it is feared that she can make anyone her prey if she gets a chance. The Ghatsila subdivision administration has imposed prohibitory orders in the surrounding areas including Chiyabandi, Pandrasoli, Dhadhika and Kharbandha villages from December 11 in view of the safety of the villagers. People have been prohibited from roaming around in the area without any reason. The school for children in Chiyabandi village has been closed due to fear of the tigress. In other three-four villages, people are not sending their children to schools. People in about 20 km area are in panic.
Attempt to catch tigress by feeding buffalo
To catch the tigress, the forest department team had tied a buffalo and left it in Chiyabandi forest on Wednesday, so that when it comes to hunt it, it can be caught by giving it an injection to make it unconscious. On Thursday early morning, the tigress also attacked the buffalo. The forest department team of Odisha fired an injection at the tigress to make her unconscious, but missed the target and she managed to run back inside the forest.
Tigeres named Zeenat and Jamuna were brought to Simlipal Tiger Reserve in October-November from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve of Maharashtra. Zeenat was kept in an enclosure for 10 days before being released in the core of Simlipal North on November 24. On Monday night, Zeenat left her habitat in STR and reached Jharkhand, about 35 km away. She has reached Chiabandi forest via Gudabanda, Chakulia Nayagram, Rajabasa.
Discussion between Jharkhand and Odisha government
The forest department is continuously getting the location of the tigress with the help of radio-collar and GPS fitted on her. A team of 20 forest department personnel has been deployed to keep an eye on the tigress. Discussions have also been held between Jharkhand and Odisha government regarding the tigress. The forest departments of both the states have prepared a strategy to capture her or take her back to Simlipal Tiger Reserve (STR) of Odisha in a natural way. STR field director Prakash Chand Gogineni has said that efforts are continuously being made to bring Zeenat back.
