Hemant Soren, caught in the land scam case of Jharkhand, resigned from the post of Chief Minister on Wednesday evening. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Soren, after which Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Champai Soren will be the next Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Champai has staked claim to form the government, although Raj Bhavan has not yet decided the time for swearing in. With the arrest of Hemant Soren, despite forming the government with majority in Jharkhand, he could not complete his tenure and after 4 years he too had to resign.

It has been 23 years since Jharkhand was separated from Bihar. In these 23 years of political history, there have been a total of 11 Chief Ministers. Champai Soren is going to be crowned as the 12th CM. In the history of Jharkhand, BJP leader Raghubar Das has been the only Chief Minister who completed his five-year tenure. Whereas, before this, Babulal Marandi, Arjun Munda, Shibu Soren, Madhu Koda and Hemant Soren have become CMs in the state, but no Chief Minister could complete his five-year tenure.

So far, 6 leaders have got the chance to become Chief Minister in Jharkhand, who took power 11 times. In this, BJP leader Arjun Munda and JMM chief Shibu Soren got the maximum opportunity and became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times each. Now if Champai Soren becomes CM then he will be the 7th leader.

Jharkhand is a tribal dominated state and most of the power in the state was occupied by tribal leaders, but till now not a single tribal leader could remain on the post of CM for 5 consecutive years. Not only this, President’s rule has also been imposed in the state thrice in 23 years.

Babulal Marandi was the first CM
There has been a movement for a long time regarding Jharkhand state, but on 15 November 2000, Jharkhand state was separated from Bihar. Babulal Marandi was first crowned as Chief Minister. In November 2000, BJP and tribal leader Babulal got the privilege of becoming the first Chief Minister of the state. In this way he remained in office from November 15, 2000 to March 17, 2003. However, Marandi could not complete his tenure and had to step down as Chief Minister due to internal opposition. In this way, Marandi remained the Chief Minister for two years and 123 days.

Arjun Munda became Chief Minister thrice
After Babulal Marandi stepped down from the post of CM, BJP’s Arjun Munda took power. Arjun Munda became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand thrice, but could not complete his five-year term even once. He became the Chief Minister for the first time on 18 March 2003 and remained in office till 2 March 2005. That means he remained on the post of CM for one year and 149 days. After this, he became the Chief Minister for the second time on 12 March 2005 and remained in the chair till 19 September 2006. This time he remained CM for one year and 191 days. Arjun Munda became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the third time on 11 September 2010 and held the chair till 18 January 2013. This time he remained the Chief Minister for two years, but could not complete his tenure of five years.

Shibu Soren also became CM thrice
Shibu Soren, who was the face of the Jharkhand movement, also became the Chief Minister of the state thrice, but could never complete his five-year tenure. Sometimes he remained in office only for 10 days, sometimes 145 days and sometimes 153 days. Shibu Soren got the opportunity to become the Chief Minister for the first time in the year 2005, when the BJP government led by Arjun Munda fell. On March 2, 2005, Shibu Soren took oath as CM, but due to not being able to prove majority, he had to leave the chair after 10 days on March 12, 2005. In this way, for the first time he could remain the Chief Minister for only 10 days. After this, Shibu Soren became CM for the second time on 27 August 2008 and remained till 19 January 2009. Shibu Soren took oath as Chief Minister for the third time on 30 December 2009 and remained in office till 1 June 2010. Shibu Soren became the CM of Jharkhand thrice, but leave alone 5 years, he could not remain in office even for six months.

Independent MLA Madhu Koda becomes CM
In Jharkhand, independent MLA Madhu Koda has also had the privilege of becoming the Chief Minister. Madhu Koda took oath as Chief Minister on 18 September 2006 and remained in office till 27 August 2008. In this way he remained the Chief Minister of the state for one year and 343 days. Madhu Koda took over as the fifth Chief Minister in the history of Jharkhand and held the position for about two years. Madhu Koda’s name is recorded in the Limca Book of World Records for becoming the Chief Minister despite being an independent MLA.

Raghubar Das remained CM for 5 years
In 2014, BJP formed the government in Jharkhand with full majority, after which the command of power was handed over to non-tribal community leader Raghubar Das for the first time in the state. Raghubar Das took oath as Chief Minister on 28 December 2014 and completed his five-year tenure till 28 December 2019. BJP lost in the 2019 assembly elections, due to which he had to be ousted from the chair. Raghubar Das was the only Chief Minister in the political history of Jharkhand, who has the record of remaining CM for 5 years.

Hemant Soren became Chief Minister twice
Shibu Soren’s son Hemant Soren became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand twice, but once again he could not complete his tenure. After this, he became CM for the second time on 29 December 2019 and held the chair till 31 January 2024. In this way, with the arrest of Hemant Soren, his name has also been included among the Chief Ministers who did not complete their tenure despite forming the government with majority in Jharkhand.

The Grand Alliance led by Hemant Soren formed the government in 2019 by defeating the Raghubar Das-led BJP. With this, Hemant’s tenure began and the government kept moving forward despite hiccups for four years. Despite full majority, Hemant Soren could not complete the tenure of Chief Minister for five years. He had to leave the chair after four years and 33 days. Champai Soren has been chosen as the new leader after the resignation of Hemant Soren on Wednesday amid the land scam.
