Vice President of National Conference and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah has demanded from Union Home Minister Amit to lift the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami. He says that like other parties and candidates, they should also get a chance to contest the elections. For this he requested Shah.
Speaking to reporters after the election campaign in Tangmarg in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday, May 15, Omar Abdullah said that he urges the Union Home Minister to immediately lift the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami. The former Chief Minister said that Jamaat-e-Islami, which directly or indirectly works for other parties or candidates, should also try its luck by fielding its own candidates in the election field.
‘Ban should be removed from Jamaat-e-Islami’
Omar Abdullah said that his request to the Markaz is that the ban imposed on Jamaat-e-Islami should be removed so that its own candidates can stand on behalf of this organization in the upcoming assembly elections which are to be held in July-August. . He said that many times such reports have come to light that Jamaat-e-Islami has helped many candidates or parties. Mar Abdullah said that the Jamaat should participate with full force in the upcoming elections.
‘The organization can participate in the upcoming assembly elections’
Former Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir chief Ghulam Qadir Wani also said on Wednesday that if the central government lifts the ban imposed on the organization in 2019, then his organization can participate in the upcoming assembly elections. After voting on Srinagar Lok Sabha seat last Monday, Wani had said that his organization believes in the democratic process. And has also taken part in earlier elections.
Jamaat-e-Islami organization has not participated in any election since 1987. The headquarters of this organization is in Srinagar. Jamaat-e-Islami has been considering Kashmir as a disputed area. In February 2019, the Central Government had imposed a five-year ban on this organization under UAPA, while in February 2024, the Union Home Ministry had extended the ban on the organization for five years.
