Justice Joymalya Bagchi of the Calcutta High Court will be sworn in as a Supreme Court judge on Monday. Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna will administer the oath of office to Justice Bagchi in the presence of other judges of the apex court at a ceremony in the Supreme Court premises.
After Justice Bagchi takes oath, the approved number of judges in the Supreme Court will increase to 33 as against 34. Justice Bagchi’s tenure in the Supreme Court will be more than six years. During this time he will also serve as the CJI of India.
Justice Bagchi’s name approved
Upon Justice KV Vishwanathan’s retirement on 25 May 2031, Justice Bagchi will hold the post of CJI of India till his retirement on 2 October 2031. He was born on 3 October 1966. The Central Government had approved the name of Justice Bagchi for appointment as a Supreme Court judge on 10 March. A five-member collegium headed by CJI Sanjiv Khanna recommended his name as a Supreme Court judge on March 6.
Appointed as Judge in Calcutta High Court
Justice Bagchi was appointed as a judge in the Calcutta High Court on June 27, 2011. He was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 4, 2021. Justice Bagchi was sent back to the Calcutta High Court on November 8, 2021 and has been working there since then. He has served as a High Court judge for over 13 years. During his long tenure, Justice Bagchi gained significant experience in diverse areas of law.
