K. Muraleedharan: Senior Congress leader K. Muraleedharan slammed Shashi Tharoor, saying the Thiruvananthapuram MP will not be invited to any Congress event in the state capital, know what else he said

Senior Congress leader K. Muraleedharan on Sunday made a big statement about Shashi Tharoor. Criticising Tharoor, Muraleedharan said that the Thiruvananthapuram MP will not be invited to any Congress event in the state capital until he changes his stand on national security. Former Union Minister Muraleedharan also said that Tharoor, a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), is no longer considered “one of us”. He further said that the party’s national leadership will decide what action to take against Tharoor.

Tharoor warned

Responding to questions about Tharoor’s adamant stand on his views on national security, Muraleedharan said, “Until he (Tharoor) changes his stand, we will not invite him to any party event organised in Thiruvananthapuram. He is not with us, so there is no question of boycotting any of his events.” His comments came a day after Tharoor defended his stand at an event in Kochi. Tharoor had said, “The nation comes first and parties are the medium to make the country better.”

Tharoor had said this

Tharoor said, “Many people are criticising me strongly for my stand in support of the armed forces and the central government in connection with the recent incidents in the country and its borders. But I will stick to my point, because I believe this is the right thing for the country.” Tharoor further said that when people like him call for cooperation from other parties in the interest of national security, often their own parties consider them traitors. He further said, “This becomes a big problem.”

Muraleedharan had earlier also criticised Tharoor

Muraleedharan had targeted him for sharing a survey which said that Tharoor was the most preferred choice for the post of Chief Minister from the UDF. “He should first decide which party he belongs to,” he had said.

Muraleedharan had also criticised Tharoor for an article he wrote in a Malayalam daily in which the MP expressed critical views on former prime minister Indira Gandhi’s role during the Emergency. Reacting to this, Muraleedharan said if Tharoor felt restricted within the Congress, he should “choose a clear political path”.

The fresh criticism reflects a growing rift between Tharoor and the party leadership, especially after his statements following the Pahalgam terror attack. Some Congress leaders believe his comments have put the party on the defensive.
