There was a day in the freedom struggle which further inflamed the passion for freedom in the entire country. This day was 9 August 1925. On 9 August, some revolutionaries attacked the 8 Down Saharanpur Express train going from Saharanpur to Lucknow. After this, the government treasury was looted. The revolutionaries stopped the train near Kakori station before Lucknow and opened the treasury compartment.
Then they took all the government money in their possession. We know this incident as the Kakori incident. This plan was started from Shahjahanpur, the land of revolutionaries. Ramprasad Bismil, Ashfaq Ullah Khan, Thakur Roshan Singh and their companions, born in Shahjahanpur district, were involved in this daring plan. Companions like Rajendranath Lahiri also joined them.
Most of this work was done in Shahjahanpur
Most of the work of collecting weapons, joining companions and making plans was done here. Even after the incident, the revolutionaries remained hidden in Shahjahanpur and nearby areas for many days. Actually, the British government was carrying a huge amount of money through this train. This money being carried by the British was to be spent to make weapons against the revolutionaries in India.
The revolutionaries intended to use this money to strengthen the freedom struggle. The British government was badly shaken by this incident. The investigation of the case began. The British government recovered a sheet from the spot, on which the seal of Shahjahanpur was affixed. Through this clue, the British government caught the revolutionaries one by one.
The revolutionaries were hanged
The British government considered this a big crime and hanged Ramprasad Bismil on 19 December 1927 in Gorakhpur Central Jail, Ashfaq Ullah Khan on 19 December 1927 in Faizabad Jail, Rajendranath Lahiri on 17 December 1927 in Gonda Jail and Thakur Roshan Singh on 19 December 1927 in Naini Jail Allahabad.
The rebellion against the British had intensified. Many of his comrades were sentenced to life imprisonment and sent to Kala Pani (Andaman). The Kakori incident was not just a robbery, but it was an example of sacrifice for freedom, which further intensified the fire of rebellion against the British in the hearts of crores of Indians. The Kakori incident further ignited the fire of freedom across the country. The sacrifice of these heroes of Shahjahanpur even today reminds people of the dream of an independent India seen by them.
