Kannada actress Ranya Rao, arrested in the gold smuggling case, is in the headlines these days. New revelations are being made every day about this case. Meanwhile, the actress told the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in her statement that she had learned to hide gold by watching YouTube videos. She told that tapes were bought to tie the gold bars, they were cut to size before entering Dubai airport and then it was hidden in the body.
During interrogation, Ranya told that she used to get calls from unknown numbers for smuggling, this was the first time she brought gold from Dubai to Bangalore. The actress told that she was handed over the gold in two packets, which were packed in thick plastic packets. To hide the gold in the body, she bought crepe bandage and scissors at the airport itself.
Learned the method from YouTube
Further, the actress revealed that she had stuck the gold bars to her body in the airport bathroom. She told that she had learned to do all this by watching YouTube videos. She told that this is the first time she smuggled gold from Dubai to Bengaluru. The actress said that she had never bought gold from Dubai before.
Ranya told DRI that on March 1, 2025, she received a call from an unknown number, asking her to pick up gold bars at Gate A of Terminal 3 of Dubai International Airport. The actress said that the caller had asked her to deliver the gold at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Ranya further told that after taking the packet, she went towards the washroom near the dining lounge. When she opened the packets, she found 12 gold bars in them, which were packed in three separate packs (full bars) of four each.
Tape bought from shop near airport
The Kannada actress further told that one packet contained five cut pieces held together. She said that she wrapped the gold bars around her shin and waist using an adhesive tape. She had bought this tape from a shop near the airport. Ranya also told the officials that she had used scissors to cut the tape.
Ranya said that she used a tissue roll from the airport washroom to cover the gold stuck on her body. She also said that she had kept some gold bars under the sole of her shoes and the rest of the cut pieces in the pocket of her jeans. Ranya also confessed to the DRI that she had watched YouTube videos to understand how to wrap/hide gold on the body.
‘The person left after giving packets of gold’
The actress also claimed that the caller had already told her that the gold would be given to her in the form of ingots. Ranya also claimed that she did not know the person who contacted her and asked her to do so. The actress said that she was not completely sure who called. She told that the caller had an African-American accent. He said that the man was about six feet tall and fair. After handing over the gold, he left immediately.
Arrested from Kempegowda Airport in Bengaluru
Ranya Rao was arrested from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru in connection with the gold smuggling case. During the investigation, gold bars worth Rs 12.56 crore were seized from her. Ranya Rao had returned to Bengaluru from Dubai. At present, the matter is being investigated. DRI is trying to track the smuggling gang through the data of Ranya’s phone and laptop.
