Mangaluru: 45 prisoners in the district jail in Mangaluru, Karnataka fell victim to food poisoning on Wednesday, after which they had to be hospitalized. According to reports, the prisoners started having stomach problems after eating lunch. All 45 prisoners were admitted to the government Wenlock Hospital on Wednesday after complaining of health problems. The condition of one of these prisoners admitted to the hospital is said to be critical and he is being treated in the ICU. According to jail officials, the prisoners were served rice-sambar for lunch and ‘Avalakki’ i.e. poha for breakfast.
‘Prisoners complained of stomach ache, vomiting and diarrhea’
According to reports, the health of the prisoners started deteriorating around 3 pm after eating lunch. Giving information about the case, Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal said that after lunch, the jail officials noticed that the health of some prisoners suddenly deteriorated. He said that after lunch, the prisoners complained of stomach ache, vomiting and diarrhea. Seeing the condition of the prisoners, the jail administration immediately took all the sick prisoners to the district government hospital under police protection.
‘Food samples have been sent to the lab for testing’
The city police commissioner said that except for one prisoner admitted to the hospital, the condition of all other prisoners is said to be stable. He said that the health department team has collected food samples of the prisoners’ drinking water, breakfast and lunch and sent them to the lab for testing. Agarwal visited the hospital after the prisoners were admitted and took stock of the situation. He also spoke to the doctors treating the prisoners in the hospital.
