Karnataka: Deputy CM DK Shivakumar supported CM Siddaramaiah on 4% quota issue and said 4% quota is not only for Muslims but for all minorities and backward classes…

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has supported Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on the 4 percent quota issue. While talking to the media in Hubli, Shivakumar said that the 4 percent quota is not only for Muslims, but for all minorities and backward classes. Siddaramaiah announced reservation in government contracts in the state budget 2025-26. He said that Rs 42,018 crore has been allocated for the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

He said that the CM did not name any community, but category 2B has been included in the budget. 2B especially includes people of the Muslim community. Siddaramaiah had said that the reservation given to contractors of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Category-I, Category-IIA and Category-IIB under the provisions of the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Act will be increased to Rs 2 crore.

Who will be given reservation?
The Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act was approved after making amendments. Now reservation of up to Rs 1 crore will be given to suppliers belonging to SC, ST, Category 1, Category 2A and Category 2B in the purchase of goods and services under government departments, corporations and institutions.

Actually, the Congress government in the state had talked about giving 4 percent reservation in government tenders to please Muslims. CM Siddaramaiah has taken this decision for Muslim contractors. Muslim contractors have been given this quota to bid for government projects up to Rs 1 crore.

The BJP has criticized this decision of the state government. He said that this move is against the spirit of the Constitution and it is part of the politics of appeasement. BJP President BY Vijayendra said that the Congress is taking the state towards unrest. Vijayendra said that the government has not released any funds for the MLAs and when no tender has been issued and work has not been allotted, what is the benefit of reservation?

He said that does the old party think that only Muslims constitute a minority group? I urge CM Siddaramaiah that if he is truly a leader of all castes, he should empower the marginalized communities and make them economically strong.
