Karnataka High Court judge Justice V Srishanand has expressed regret over his recent statements. He said that this happened inadvertently. It was not meant to hurt the sentiments of any person or section of the society. He gave this clarification in the court in the presence of members of the Bangalore Advocates Association.
What was the controversial statement?
Justice Srishanand also said that if anyone is hurt by his comment, then he regrets it from the heart. Actually, Justice Srishanand made a controversial comment on August 28 after discussing road safety. He described an area of Bangalore as Pakistan. At the same time, the second comment was made for a female lawyer. Both the comments were heavily criticized on social media.
What did the BAA president say?
Vivek Subba Reddy, President of Bangalore Advocates Association, said that for his comment for the female lawyer, the judge clarified that this comment was about the knowledge of the client and was not right for the lawyer. He said that there is no doubt that he is a good judge, but he should not make such statements which are not necessary for the case. On this, Justice Shrishanand said that he will not make any such comment in future.
Supreme Court took cognizance
It is worth noting that on September 20, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the video clip containing controversial remarks of Justice Shrishanand. A 5-judge bench of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Suryakant and Hrishikesh Roy passed an order to seek a report from the Karnataka High Court. The next hearing of the case will be on September 25.
