Karnataka Bandh: Pro-Kannada groups in Karnataka have called for a 12-hour statewide bandh on Saturday, March 22. The bandh has been announced in protest against the attack on a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor in Belagavi for not speaking Marathi.

The conductor was allegedly attacked for not speaking in Marathi, which has increased the existing linguistic and regional tension in the area. In protest against this, a bandh was announced from 6 am to 6 pm. The bandh has been announced at a time when examinations are going on, which has increased the concerns of the students. Some educational institutions have expressed support for the bunk.

Who supported the bandh?

At the same time, the unions representing the employees of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) have also supported the bandh and indicated to keep the bus service closed. Apart from this, Ola, Uber Owners and Drivers Association as well as many auto-rickshaw unions have supported it.

What will remain open?

Despite the shutdown, hotels across Karnataka will remain open. Bangalore Hotel Association president PC Rao confirmed that the association supports the cause, but hotels will function as usual as they provide essential services to the public. Hospitals and medical services, metro services and shops selling essential goods will function as usual. Milk supply will also not be stopped.

Meanwhile, CAMS general secretary Sasikumar has urged Kannada organisations to reconsider the shutdown date. Students from class 1 to class 9 are in the midst of their academic examinations. He stressed that the unexpected school holiday could disrupt their studies.

What is the demand?

The organisers of the Karnataka shutdown have made several demands, including a ban on pro-Marathi groups. The organisations have demanded a ban on organisations like the Maharashtra Ekta Samiti (MES) in Karnataka, accusing them of promoting violence and disturbing harmony.
