Kashmir: Fresh snowfall in most parts and cold wave continues, Kashmir is currently in the grip of severe cold period ‘Chilla e-Kalan’

Srinagar: After overnight snowfall in Kashmir, the night temperature increased by several degrees, although the mercury is still below zero. Officials gave this information on Monday. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy snowfall in the high mountain areas of Jammu division including Kashmir on Monday and Tuesday. There is full possibility of heavy rainfall in the plains of Jammu division for two days.

What was the temperature where?
The Meteorological Department said that the minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 0.5 degrees Celsius below zero, while the minimum temperature was recorded at 2.5 degrees Celsius below zero the previous night. The minimum temperature in Gulmarg, a tourist destination famous for ‘skiing’ activities in North Kashmir, was recorded at 4.5 degrees Celsius below zero, although the temperature here was the same last night.

The Meteorological Department said that the minimum temperature in Pahalgam in South Kashmir increased to 1.4 degrees Celsius below zero, while it was 3.2 degrees below zero the previous night. The minimum temperature was zero degree Celsius in Qazigund, while Konibal in Pampore recorded a low of minus 1.0 degree Celsius. The department said that the minimum temperature in Kupwara in north Kashmir was recorded at minus 0.3 degree Celsius, while Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 0.4 degree Celsius.

Kashmir in the grip of ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’

Kashmir is currently in the grip of a severe cold period ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ which began on December 21. During the 40-day period of ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’, snowfall is most likely and the temperature drops considerably. ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ will end on January 30, but the cold wave will continue. The 40-day ‘Chilla-e-Kalan’ will also be followed by a 20-day ‘Chilla-e-Khurd’ and a 10-day ‘Chilla-e-Bachcha’ when the cold will gradually decrease in the valley.
