A case of missing valuable jewellery worth lakhs and misappropriation of goods worth 25 crores has come to light from the Guruvayur temple in Kerala. An audit of the Guruvayur Devaswom Board, which oversees 12 temples in Kerala, has revealed numerous irregularities. The audit, conducted in 2019, revealed several significant findings. The investigation revealed that valuable items, including gold, silver, and ivory, were missing from the temples.
In addition, significant irregularities were found in the board’s gold scheme, resulting in a loss of approximately 79 lakh rupees. The government conducted an audit of the Guruvayur Devaswom Board during 2019-20 and 2020-21. The report has now been released. The audit report reveals irregularities in the temple’s income and expenditure accounts. This means that the temples’ income and expenditure accounts were not properly accounted for.
The report also found that valuable items, such as gold and silver jewellery, kept in the temples were not properly verified. It is being reported that items worth a total of ₹25 crore have not been accounted for. This means that negligence has been committed in procedures such as auditing these items and matching records. Public outrage has erupted over the disappearance and mismanagement of gold at the Guruvayur temple.
Information provided to the Kerala High Court
Meanwhile, the Guruvayur Devaswom Board has responded to the audit report. The Board stated that the deficiencies and shortcomings identified in the report have now been rectified. The Board stated that complete information regarding this matter has been submitted to the Kerala High Court in the form of a detailed affidavit. The Kerala government has also agreed with the Board’s claim and stated that all necessary corrections have been made.
