Kochi: 2 kg of ganja was seized from the boys’ hostel of the Government Polytechnic College in Kalamassery, Kerala, police said on Friday. Police officials said three students were arrested in the raid conducted on Thursday night. According to police, two students were released on police bail, while a separate FIR was registered against 21-year-old Akash, a resident of Kulathupuzha in Kollam, from whose room the authorities recovered 1.909 kg of ganja.

Ganja was kept for sale and personal use
Police said the second FIR names two other students – Adityan (21), a resident of Haripad in Alappuzha, and Abhiraj (21), a resident of Karunagappally, Kollam, from whom 9.70 grams of ganja was recovered. Police officials said they have been granted bail from the police station. According to police, the banned material was meant for both sale and personal use. Thrikkakara ACP P.V. Baby said the police conducted the raid based on a tip-off about a large quantity of ganja being stored in the campus ahead of Holi celebrations.

Allegations against Left student organisation

Meanwhile, opposition leader V D Satheesan reacted to the arrest of Abhiraj R., general secretary of the Students Federation of India college union. He alleged that SFI union leaders were involved in the ganja seizure case. He accused the Left student organisation of helping in supplying drugs in college hostels and campuses.

The accused student has contested the student union elections under the KSU banner

SFI Kalamassery region president Devarajan told the media, “The arrested student Akash and two others who fled from the campus during the search are active members of the Kerala Students Union (KSU).” He urged for an investigation into the two students who fled, as one of them had contested the student union elections under the KSU banner. KSU is the student wing of the Congress. Abhiraj, who was released on bail from the police station, also claimed that he was being wrongly targeted in the case. However, Thrikkakara ACP said that the police did not look into the political affiliations of the students during the investigation
