Kolewadi Gram Sabha located in Satara district of Maharashtra has passed a resolution to conduct future elections through traditional ballot papers instead of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). This village has become the second village in Maharashtra to pass a resolution against EVMs. Kolewadi village comes under Karad (South) assembly constituency, which was earlier represented by senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. However, he lost to BJP candidate Atul Bhosale by 39,355 votes in the elections held in November 2024.
This is the second village in Maharashtra
The Gram Sabha passed this resolution when the residents of Kolewadi expressed doubts over the votes cast through EVMs. They demand that traditional ballot papers be used in the elections so that confidence in the election process can be restored. Earlier, in Markadwadi village of Malshiras constituency of Solapur, some people had questioned the credibility of EVM and tried to conduct mock re-poll through ballot papers, but the administration and police foiled it and took action in this matter.
Elections should be held through ballot papers
A person from Kolewadi Gram Sabha said that the Gram Sabha has passed a resolution and clearly stated that in future elections should be conducted only through ballot papers instead of EVM. He also said that if the administration does not allow voting through ballot papers, people will boycott the voting.
What did the District Collector say?
Reacting to this proposal, Satara District Collector Jitendra Dudi said that his office has not yet received any proposal from the Gram Panchayat. He said, “When we get the proposal, we will take necessary steps regarding it.”
