Kolkata gangrape case: Ruling TMC said, “Our stand in this matter is clear. We have zero tolerance policy for crimes against women…we demand strictest punishment.”

Referring to the gangrape of a Kolkata law student, directly attacking the controversial statements made by some of her party leaders, ruling Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra said that every party has hatred towards women. She said that the political party led by Mamata Banerjee is different from other parties because it does not shy away from condemning the nonsense of its leaders.

MP Moitra was referring to the statement of Trinamool in which it distanced itself from the controversial remarks of its own party MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra regarding the gangrape of a law student. While the opposition is making a lot of ruckus over the remarks of both the leaders, there is a lot of resentment among the people in the state.

What did Mahua Moitra say on gangrape

Earlier, MP Kalyan Banerjee made a shocking remark on Friday, saying that a woman should be careful about who she is with before going out with men with a “dirty mindset”. Similarly, Madan Mitra also advised the victim and said that if the law student had not gone to college alone, she could have avoided this unfortunate incident.

Taking a dig at the comments made by her own party leaders, Moitra said in her post on social media platform X, “Misogyny in India cuts across party lines. What differentiates Trinamool Congress is that we condemn these disgusting comments no matter who makes them.” She also tagged a post by TMC, in which the party clarified its official stand on the statements of party leaders.

Earlier, the Trinamool Congress issued its statement on the gangrape, saying that the statements made by Kalyan Banerjee and Madan Mitra were in private, and they do not reflect the official position of the party.

As the controversy escalated, the TMC posted on X, saying, “The comments of MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra regarding the heinous crime at South Calcutta Law College were made in their personal capacity. The party clearly dissociates itself from their statements and strongly condemns it. These views do not in any way reflect the party’s position.” The party further said, “Our stand on this matter is clear. We have a zero tolerance policy for crimes against women and we demand the strictest punishment for all those involved in this heinous crime.”

Parties should not politicise the rape case: TMC

Citing the statement, Moitra also cornered the opposition party BJP, which has been continuously protesting against the state government over the incident and demanding that the culprits be brought to justice. The BJP alleges that it was a “state-sponsored” conspiracy. A girl was brutalised in a state where there is a woman chief minister.

Hours after the gangrape case came to light on Friday last week, the Trinamool Congress condemned the incident and also requested other parties that the matter should not be politicised. West Bengal minister Shashi Panja said that the state government stands firmly with the woman and her family.

A TMC leader is also among the arrested accused
A 24-year-old student of South Calcutta Law College was gangraped, for which 3 people have been arrested, apart from a security guard of the college. The prime accused has been identified as Manojit Mishra, 31, a former student and current general secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) South Kolkata district.

The two other accused have been identified as Zaib Ahmed (19), a first-year student, and Pramit Mukherjee (20), another student. The fourth person arrested in the case is a security guard of the college, who is accused of protecting the culprits by not reporting the matter to the college authorities or the police, despite having full knowledge of the incident.
