Kolkata: A shocking incident has emerged from West Bengal’s Jadavpur University. The left-wing student organization RSF held its state conference there. During the event, the organization symbolically named the venue after Maoist leaders killed by security forces. This incident has sparked controversy. The event, which began on November 24th and lasted three days, was organized by the student organization, The Revolutionary Students’ Front, at the Vivekananda Auditorium of Jadavpur University in Kolkata.

Named after Maoist leaders
The controversy arose when during the event, Jadavpur was renamed “Hidma Nagar,” Kolkata was renamed “Koteswar Rao Nagar,” and the auditorium was named “Basavaraju Auditorium.” It should be noted that Madavi Hidma, a “commander” of the CPI (Maoist), was recently killed in an encounter with security forces on November 18th in Alluri Sitaramaraju district of Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, the powerful general secretary of the CPI (Maoist), Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju, was killed in an encounter in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh in May. Koteshwar Rao alias Kishanji was killed in 2011 in Burishol village in the Jangalmahal region of West Bengal.

RSF issues clarification
However, RSF general secretary Tathagata Roy Chowdhury claimed, “The naming was symbolic and there was no discussion or debate at the conference that indicated any separatist or anti-national activity.” A senior university official stated that the organization had been granted permission for the conference as per the rules. He added, “We did not know what would happen during the conference.” A senior police officer stated that information about the event had been gathered. He added, “We are monitoring the matter. This is an internal matter of the university and we cannot interfere.”
