A major accident has occurred in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Two loco trains carrying workers inside a tunnel of the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) in Pipalkoti collided. 70 workers were injured in the accident. The incident took place on Tuesday night at around 10 pm when the workers’ shift was changing. Approximately 108 workers were on board the two trains.
How did the accident happen?
Initial investigations suggest that a technical malfunction caused one train to collide with the other from behind. The collision, which occurred in a dark section of the tunnel, caught the workers inside off guard, and many fell inside the train. Immediately after the collision, there were screams and chaos inside the tunnel. The workers were disoriented and unsure how to get out.
47 workers being treated at Gopeshwar District Hospital
Upon receiving the information, project management personnel and local administration teams immediately reached the spot and started relief and rescue operations. The injured were taken to Gopeshwar District Hospital in ambulances and other vehicles. Doctors at the district hospital say that most of the workers sustained minor injuries, while some have serious injuries and are under special observation. 42 injured workers are being treated at Gopeshwar District Hospital, while 17 workers have been admitted to a hospital in Pipalkoti.
Most of the workers are from Jharkhand and Odisha
Upon receiving news of the accident, District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar and Superintendent of Police Surjit Singh Panwar reached Gopeshwar District Hospital and inquired about the condition of the injured and instructed the doctors to provide the best possible treatment. Most of the workers are from Jharkhand and Odisha. The families of the injured workers are also being informed.
The Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) is running a hydro-electric project in Vishnuprayag, Pipalkoti. This accident occurred inside the tunnel of this project.
