Luanda: The city of Angola’s capital Luanda was rocked by two days of violent protests against the hike in diesel prices. According to the police, 4 people lost their lives in this uproar, while more than 500 people have been arrested. This uproar started on Monday when the government’s recent decision increased the price of diesel by more than 30 percent. This increase directly affected minibus taxis, which are the most popular and economical means of transport for the common people of Angola. The sudden huge increase in taxi fares provoked people’s anger, after which hundreds of people took to the streets.
The police took strict action to control the situation
Police spokesman Mateus de Lemos Rodrigues said on Tuesday that the protesters created a lot of ruckus in the city. There was vandalism at many places, shops were looted, vehicles and buses were damaged. The roads were blocked by putting barricades on the roads, which created an atmosphere of chaos in Luanda. The police took strict action to control the situation and detained hundreds of protesters. Police say that now peace has been restored in most parts of the city.
Strong protests were also held in early July
This is not the first time that there has been a ruckus in Angola over fuel prices. Earlier this month, protests were also held on the same issue. Then Human Rights Watch had accused the police of using excessive force against peaceful protesters. Allegations of strictness on protests in Angola are nothing new. The ruling party here, the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), has been in power continuously since independence from Portugal in 1975. Many people accuse the government of taking strict measures to suppress the voice of the people.
Angola is famous for minerals like oil and diamonds
Angola, located in the southern part of Africa, is a beautiful country which is famous for its natural wealth, especially oil and diamonds. Its capital Luanda is known for its beautiful beaches and great culture. But despite this, the common people of this country are facing problems like inflation, unemployment and lack of basic facilities. Decisions like increase in fuel prices provoke the anger of the people and they come out on the streets.
