The case of the death of Dalit protester Somnath Suryavanshi in Maharashtra is getting heated. After the findings of the magistrate investigation, Maharashtra unit president of Congress Harshvardhan Sapkal has demanded a murder case to be registered against the police officers. The Congress questioned who is Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis protecting? The magistrate inquiry into the custodial death of Suryavanshi revealed that he died due to the beating by the police.
Demand for dismissal of policemen also
Congress leader Sapkal accused Fadnavis, who is in charge of the Home Ministry, of misleading the people by blaming asthma for Suryavanshi’s death in a statement given during the winter session of the Assembly last year. The Congress leader also demanded the dismissal of the Parbhani policemen responsible for Suryavanshi’s death.
Died in police custody in December last year
35-year-old Somnath Suryavanshi died during judicial custody at a government hospital in Parbhani on December 15 last year. He was arrested in connection with the violence over damage to the copy of the Constitution kept in a glass box. The police had claimed that Suryavanshi died due to illness.
Case of natural death registered
Sapkal has demanded a murder case against the police officers after the Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission (MSHRC) said that a perusal of the magisterial inquiry report shows that the judicial magistrate has come to the conclusion that Suryavanshi was beaten up at the Nav Mondha police station in Parbhani. He said that Suryavanshi died due to police brutality, but a case of natural death has been registered in this regard to suppress the matter.
When will the Fadnavis government wake up?
The Congress leader said, ‘The post-mortem report has confirmed that he died due to beating by the police during custody, but the government did not take it seriously. Now the magistrate’s inquiry has also revealed that Suryavanshi died due to police brutality.’ He asked whether the Fadnavis government will finally wake up?
This is a blot on humanity – Congress leader
Sapkal said that the Parbhani case is extremely serious and a blot on humanity. He alleged that the police failed to properly handle the incident of damage to the copy of the Constitution in Parbhani and instead brutally lathicharged the peaceful protesters, severely assaulted many people and put many others in jail.
The government tried to suppress the matter
Sapkal alleged, ‘Suryavanshi was arrested. He was brutally beaten up and eventually died due to the assault. But the government tried to suppress the matter.’ The Congress leader demanded that there should be an investigation into who ordered the search operation and lathicharge in Parbhani. He asked, ‘Was this order given by the ministry or the office of the Director General of Police?’
The government is anti-Dalit
Sapkal accused Fadnavis of failing to handle the Parbhani case and said that a Dalit youth died due to police brutality, but the government is not taking it seriously, which shows that the BJP-led government has an anti-Dalit mindset.
