A political uproar has erupted in Maharashtra over the issue of Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan. Following a statement by Congress state president Harsh Vardhan Sapkal, the BJP has attacked him. In light of the growing controversy, Sapkal has apologized. Speaking to the media, Sapkal stated that his statement had been distorted.

Congress state president Harsh Vardhan Sapkal stated that he never intended to hurt people’s sentiments. Clarifying his statement, he stated that he had cited Tipu Sultan’s call to fight against the British, citing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s valor and the concept of “Swarajya.” He claimed that this comparison was not intended. He stated that the statement was circulated by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders as part of a malicious campaign. The BJP has attempted to incite tension in society throughout this campaign.

Will not bow to threats from BJP leaders
Speaking to the media, Congress state president Harsh Vardhan Sapkal said that he will not bow to threats from BJP leaders, who have offered a reward for cutting out his tongue. He said that if action against them helps provide relief to farmers, end unfair trade agreements, and prevent communal polarization, he is willing to face the consequences. But he is not willing to bow to the BJP. Sapkal said that he does not engage in hate politics, whereas the BJP works to poison society.

What did Sapkal say?

Maharashtra Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal, during an event, allegedly drew parallels between Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century ruler of Mysore. After Sapkal’s video went viral, the BJP and other Hindu organizations protested. Furthermore, Hindu organizations in various parts of the state burned Sapkal’s effigy and demanded an apology. An FIR was filed against him in Pune, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis strongly condemned the remarks.

Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena and VHP also condemned the remarks.

Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) condemned the comparison between the 18th-century ruler of Mysore and the founder of the Maratha Empire. The Shiv Sena said that comparing Tipu with Shivaji is extremely wrong. Shivaji Maharaj fought for Swaraj. Milind Parande, the national organization general secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), also expressed surprise at such a comment by a Maharashtrian leader about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. After which the Maharashtra Congress State President had to come forward and apologize.
