In Maharashtra, a controversy has been sparked by BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar’s remarks regarding NCP (Sharad Pawar) faction leader Jayant Patil. The remarks have sparked widespread backlash, with protests erupting at various locations.
NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar spoke with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis over the phone regarding the remarks. Fadnavis subsequently called Gopichand Padalkar and advised him to refrain from making statements.
Following the remarks, the NCP (SP) protested in Patil’s constituency, Ishwarpur (formerly Islampur), in Sangli, as well as in Thane, where they burned an effigy of Padalkar.
Patil, who until recently was the state NCP (SP) chief and served as a minister for several years, is the son of the late Rajaram Patil, a senior Congress leader and one of the pioneers of the cooperative sector in western Maharashtra.
What instructions did the Chief Minister give?
Gopichand Padalkar stated that he received a call from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The Chief Minister has strictly instructed him not to make such statements. I will follow his instructions. I will continue to follow the Chief Minister’s instructions in the future.
During this call, he criticized Sharad Pawar. He also targeted him. He stated that he did not see when he made the comment about the Chief Minister’s mother. Furthermore, an AI video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother has also been created.
Meanwhile, Sharad Pawar directly called the state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Sharad Pawar condemned the actions of his MLAs. He said that the kind of low-level criticism being made is not the culture of Maharashtra. Later, speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Fadnavis said that he also disagreed with Padalkar’s comments.
Protests against Padalkar’s remarks
He said, “Padalkar is young and aggressive, and sometimes he doesn’t understand the consequences of his comments. I spoke to him and asked him to exercise restraint. I told Sharad Pawar, who spoke to me this morning, that I also don’t support such comments.” The NCP (SP) held a protest in Ishwarpur to condemn Padalkar’s remarks.
MLA Jitendra Awhad led the protest in Thane. Party workers burned an effigy of the BJP MLA while raising slogans against him.
Speaking to reporters after the protest, Awhad said, “This isn’t just about Jayant Patil. It’s about the level of discourse in Maharashtra politics. The BJP must take responsibility and take action against Padalkar. If it doesn’t, it will be considered a party that promotes such filth.” Party officials said Padalkar had crossed all limits and challenged him to come to Thane and face the wrath of party workers.
