Senior Shiv Sena leader and former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Manohar Joshi passed away this morning. He was the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Maharashtra. However, an incident related to him is very famous when Manohar Joshi lost the post of Chief Minister because of his son-in-law. Due to this reason Joshi could not complete the five-year tenure as Chief Minister.
In fact, Joshi became the Chief Minister of the state on March 14, 1995, but within four years he had to resign on January 31, 1999. When the post became vacant due to Joshi’s resignation, the party made Narayan Rane the Chief Minister. He was the second Chief Minister of Maharashtra from Shiv Sena party. After Narayan Rane Joshi, he was the Chief Minister till 17 October.
The question is why Manohar Joshi had to vacate the post of Chief Minister even before the completion of five years? Why did late Shiv Sena founder and chief Bala Saheb Thackeray order Joshi to resign? Today we will remember the same incident. A Pune plot case became the reason for Joshi’s departure.
What was the whole matter?
Joshi was at the peak of his political career as Chief Minister. The reason was his son-in-law Girish Vyas. Vyas was a big businessman in real estate business. It was alleged that the status of the plot reserved for a school in Pune for Girish Vyas was changed. The land where Girish Vyas built the ten-storey building in Prabhat Road area of Pune city was reserved for a primary school. Then there was bound to be a controversy, and it did happen.
The matter reached Balasaheb Thackeray. Balasaheb Thackeray ordered Manohar Joshi to resign. Following the orders of Balasaheb Thackeray, Joshi had to resign from the post of Chief Minister. The case of that building located on Prabhat Road, Pune later reached the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court heard the case in detail and found that there was violation of laws while changing the reservation status of the land.
Ultimately the country’s biggest court ordered to hand over the ten-storey building to Pune Municipal Corporation. Besides, the Supreme Court also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on Girish Vyas. Later the Pune Municipality acquired that ten-storey building and a school was started here in 2013, which was named after Swami Vivekananda. So in this way Joshi had to lose his chair because of his son-in-law.

Manohar Joshi’s health was deteriorating since May last year. At that time he had suffered a brain hemorrhage. After this he was taken to the ICU of Hinduja Hospital, where he was treated. Since doctors saw little hope of recovery, he was asked to return to his home in Shivaji Park, where he was being looked after.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Sandeep Deshpande expressed grief over the demise of Manohar Joshi and paid tribute to him.
Manohar Joshi was the most trusted leader of Balasaheb Thackeray.
Born on 2 December 1937 in Mahad, Maharashtra, Joshi graduated in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), Mumbai. Joshi’s political journey started by joining Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later he became a member of Shiv Sena. Joshi emerged as a prominent leader within the Shiv Sena in the 1980s, known for his organizational skills and grassroots connect.
Manohar Joshi has always been one of the most trusted and close leaders of Balasaheb Thackeray. This was the reason why he was made the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in the year 1995. For the first time, Shiv Sena took power in the state and was handed over the chair of CM. He was also elected as a Member of Parliament and was the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004.
