The Maharashtra government has adopted a strict attitude towards adulteration of milk. The government has talked about presenting a proposal to apply MCOCA law on adulteration of milk. This meeting was held in Vidhan Bhavan under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The government says that adulteration in milk and related food items is a very serious matter, which poses a threat to the lives of people. It will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Necessary amendments will be made in the existing law to take strict action under MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act) against those who adulterate milk and other food items. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar gave instructions in the meeting to prepare a proposal in this regard and present it before the cabinet.

Why the meeting was held
This meeting was organized under the attention motion raised in the Assembly on the incidents of selling ‘Analog Cheese’ in the name of ‘Analog Paneer’ in the state as well as the milk adulteration case that came to light in Bhose village of Pandharpur taluka of Solapur district. This meeting was held in Vidhan Bhavan under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

What is the punishment?

Earlier also it was announced in the assembly that a law of punishment up to three years for adulterators of milk will be implemented soon. In the current situation, there is a provision of only six months’ punishment for adulterators of milk, due to which the accused gets bail immediately. If the provision of punishment is made 3 years, there will be a delay in getting bail and after the proposal of MCOCA is passed, the accused of adulterating milk will not get bail for 6 months. If MCOCA is applied and proved in the court, there is a provision of punishment ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment for the accused.

If the punishment is increased to three years, then the accused will not get bail. Therefore, there was a demand to bring a law providing for a punishment of three years for this crime. According to information, most of the accused caught in fake and adulterated milk cases across the country get bail within 1 day to 1 week and even after getting bail, 40 percent of the accused are caught again on charges of milk adulteration.
