Maharashtra GOVT: Maharashtra government withdrew the decision to teach Hindi as a compulsory subject from class 1 to 3 in schools, now Hindi will be taught as a third language.

Maharashtra: Politics was intense since the decision to make Hindi language compulsory in Maharashtra schools. Now the government has decided that Hindi will not be kept ‘compulsory’ from class 1 to 3, but Hindi will be taught as a third language in general. For this, the School Education Department has issued a new government decision.

According to the government decision, the ‘trilingual’ formula will be adopted from class-1. If more than 20 students in the class want to learn another language instead of Hindi, the teacher will make it available or the language subject will be taught online. According to the State Curriculum Plan for School Education 2024, Hindi will now be the third language for classes 1 to 5 in Marathi and English medium schools.

What if you want to learn a language other than Hindi?

If these students show a desire to learn one of the other Indian languages as a third language instead of Hindi, then those students will be allowed to learn that language as a third language. Provided, the number of such students in the school should be at least 20 class-wise who show a desire to learn other languages instead of Hindi as a third language.

Marathi compulsory in all medium schools
If at least 20 students show interest in learning a third language other than Hindi, then a teacher will be provided to teach that language, otherwise that language will be taught online. Marathi will be a compulsory language in all medium schools.

Decision to make Hindi compulsory from class 1 withdrawn
The Devendra Fadnavis government had earlier decided that the three-language formula would be implemented from class 1, in which Hindi would be compulsory as the third language in Marathi and English medium schools. This decision was taken while implementing the state curriculum framework along with the implementation of the National Education Policy, but it was strongly opposed by many politicians and teachers’ organizations. After this, Education Minister Dada Bhuse announced that the government is withdrawing this decision.

20 students are required to study other languages
The order states that Hindi will generally be the third language in Marathi and English medium schools from first to fifth, but if a student wants to study any other Indian language as the third language instead of Hindi, he will be allowed to do so. However, at least 20 students will be required to wish for this. That is, a minimum of 20 students should be interested in teaching any other language.

Marathi language will be compulsory in schools of all mediums. The responsibility of implementing this decision has been given to the Education Commissioner, Maharashtra Government, Pune. Apart from Marathi and English medium, all three languages - medium language, Marathi and English – will be taught in schools of other mediums from first to fifth. The language policy from sixth to tenth class will be as per the state curriculum framework.
