Maharashtra: More than 100 people infected with ‘Guillain-Barre Syndrome’ (GBS) in Pune, one person died

More than 100 people have been infected with ‘Guillain-Barre Syndrome’ (GBS) in Pune, Maharashtra. Out of these, a person from Solapur has also died. Meanwhile, state Health Minister Prakashrao Abitkar has said that the health department is working well to prevent the infection. Along with this, he informed that soon the expert team will give its opinion on this. Health officials said on Monday that the number of people infected with this immune disorder in Pune has reached 101.

Maharashtra Health Minister Prakashrao Abitkar said, “We will soon get the opinion of our expert team of doctors about GBS (Guillain-Barre Syndrome) patients. Pune Municipal Corporation and Maharashtra Health Department are working well so that the number of patients does not increase. Currently, there are 101 suspected patients, out of which 73 patients have been diagnosed with GBS. There has been one death.”

First death from GBS in Maharashtra

Officials said that this is probably the first case of death due to GBS in Maharashtra. The 40-year-old man, a resident of Solapur, had come to Pune. It is suspected that he got infected in Pune. “The patient, who was suffering from breathing problems, weakness in lower limbs, diarrhoea, was admitted to a private hospital (in Solapur) on January 18 where he was put on ventilator multiple times. He died on Sunday,” said Dr Sanjeev Thakur, dean of Solapur Government Medical College. After his death, the case was referred to Solapur Government Hospital for medical examination, the official said. “Preliminary reports indicate that he was infected with GBS,” the official said.

16 patients on ventilators
Dr Thakur said they also conducted a clinical post-mortem of the body to ascertain the exact cause of death. He said preliminary reports indicate that the death was due to GBS. He said blood samples of the deceased have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for further examination. Earlier, a state health department official said, “The total number of GBS cases in Pune rose to 101 on Sunday. The infected people include 68 men and 33 women. Of these, 16 patients are on ventilators. The death of a person suspected to be infected has been reported in Solapur.”

What is GBS?

GBS is a rare disorder in which parts of the body suddenly become numb and muscles become weak. Along with this, the disease also has symptoms like severe weakness in the hands and feet. Doctors said that usually bacterial and viral infections cause GBS as they weaken the immune system of the patients. State Health Minister Prakash Abitkar is in Pune and he will visit the well in Nanded village on Sinhagad Road, from where water is supplied to the surrounding villages. Abitkar will also visit some hospitals in Pune, including Sasoon General Hospital, to know the condition of the patients undergoing treatment.

Team of doctors reaches Pune
According to sources in the health department of the local civic body, a team of specialist doctors sent by the central government has also arrived in Pune. Meanwhile, the Rapid Response Team (RRT) and officials of the health department of Pune Municipal Corporation are monitoring the infection cases in the affected Sinhagad Road areas. The official said that a total of 25,578 houses have been surveyed so far, which includes 15,761 houses falling in the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, 3,719 houses falling in the Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits and 6,098 houses falling in the rural areas of the district.
