The search for an Indian woman who fell into a sinkhole nine days ago in Malaysia was suddenly halted on Saturday. Vijaya Lakshmi (48) fell into a sinkhole near Jalan Masjid in the Malaysian capital on August 23 and has been missing since then.

Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territory), said on Saturday that this decision has been taken after expert and technical advice.

Decision to stop the search operation

Dr. Zaliha Mustafa said at the sinkhole site that after nine days of search and rescue (SAR) and discussions with the Cabinet as well as the police, search team, geologists and other experts, we have decided to stop the search operation today.

The woman had fallen into a sinkhole

Earlier, the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur said that the search for Vijaya Lakshmi, who fell into a sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur on August 23, is continuing. SAR teams are methodically exploring new possible routes and possible locations of the missing Indian citizen. Vijay Laxmi is being searched with special techniques including high pressure water jets, remote cameras and ground penetrating radar.

Contact with family members
It said the High Commission is in close contact with the concerned agencies engaged in the search operation. High Commission officials were also in touch with family members. At least 10 business shops in the area were affected by the incident. Her husband and son were reported to have managed to escape from the debris on Friday. The High Commission had also extended the duration of her tourist visa to stay in Malaysia while the search was ongoing.
