Maldives President Mohammad Moizzo would not have imagined even in his dreams that enmity with India would prove so costly for his country. The situation is such that despite being surrounded by water on all four sides, Maldives is yearning for every drop of drinking water.
When Moizzu, who has already spoiled relations with India, could not find any way to overcome this crisis, he begged China and ordered 1500 tonnes of drinking water from there to his country. Now the people of the country are raising questions that instead of ordering water from China which is about 4 thousand km away, why did he not ask for help from India, which is a traditional friend and which is only 300 km away from Maldives.
China stole water from Tibet and sent it to Maldives
According to the report, on the request of the Moizzu government, China has sent 1500 tonnes of drinking water to Maldives through a container ship. It obtained this water from the glaciers of Tibet which it had usurped, which was later sent to Maldives as a symbol of friendship. The Moizzu government announced that the ship full of water sent by China has reached Maldives.
Moizzu had made a request in November last year
This incident of sending water to Maldives is being said to be the result of the visit of Tibet Autonomous Region Chairman Yan Jinhai to Maldives last year. During that visit, he met many senior leaders of Maldives including Moizzu. In the same meeting, Moizzu had appealed to him to send a ship full of drinking water to deal with the drinking water crisis. After which, now a ship full of water has reached there. Moizzu government is now planning to distribute this water equally in its various islands.
Military agreement with China
This is not the first case of help from China to Maldives. This month, Moizzu had announced that Maldives has signed an agreement with China, under which it will get non-lethal military equipment as well as military training from the Chinese army. This agreement was reached after President Moizzu’s meetings with Major General Zhang Baokun, Deputy Director of China’s International Military Cooperation Office and Ren Shengjun, President of China’s Export-Import Bank.
Maldives is facing a serious water crisis
Maldives has 26 coral islands and 1,192 normal islands. Most of these are made up of coral rocks and sandy rocks. Due to climate change, the groundwater level there has gone down so much that the whole country is facing a serious water crisis. It does not even have the technology that can clean sea water and turn it into fresh water. In such a situation, the crisis has deepened for it.
Enmity with India is proving very costly
Maldives’ problem is that due to the poisonous words of President Moizzo, its traditional helper and friend India has also turned away from it. Till now, whenever it faced a crisis, India was the first to reach there for help. In December 2014, when a serious water crisis arose in Maldives due to a massive fire in the sewerage company complex in the capital Male, India launched ‘Operation Neer’.
India has been the first helper in times of crisis
Under this, Indian Air Force planes immediately delivered 375 tons of drinking water to Male as emergency help. While later 2,000 tons of water was delivered there through two ships of the Indian Navy, INS Deepak and INS Sukanya. This helped the people of Maldives a lot in leading their lives.
Now Moizzu is paying the price for his actions
The northern island of Maldives is just 70 nautical miles away from Minicoy Island in India’s Lakshadweep. While the distance of Maldives from the western coast of the mainland is about 300 nautical miles. This is the reason why India has always been the first responder of Maldives. But the radical thinking of President Moizzu has created such a rift in the relations between the two countries, which cannot be filled quickly.
