Manila: An impeachment complaint has been filed against the country’s Vice President Sara Duterte, who has been embroiled in a legal crisis since she publicly threatened to kill Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Apart from threatening the President, Duterte is also facing trouble due to allegations of alleged role in the killings of drug trafficking suspects, corruption and failure to stand up against Chinese aggression in the disputed South China Sea.
Duterte did not respond
The impeachment motion introduced by several prominent civil society activists in the lower house of Parliament, the House of Representatives, accuses Duterte of violating the country’s constitution, betraying the people and committing other ‘serious crimes’, including threatening to kill the President, his wife and the Speaker of the House of Representatives. Duterte did not immediately respond to the impeachment motion in which he has been accused of involvement in about two dozen crimes.
Parliament will review the complaint
“We hope that with this complaint, all that people have to suffer because of our vice president will come to an end,” said MP Percival Cendana, who supported the proposal. The Philippines’ parliament will review the impeachment complaint, which is dominated by Marcos and his relatives and supporters, Romualdez’s allies. The process could take several weeks or months.
What did Duterte say?
Duterte had recently said that if she herself is killed in a conspiracy, then the President, his wife and the Speaker of the House of Representatives will also be killed. He did not give details of the conspiracy. After this, Philippines police officials filed a criminal complaint against Duterte and his security staff.
