Manipur: Congress chief Meghchandra – “This is a clear example of the negligence of PM Modi and the Central government….neither visited the state nor invited the state representatives for talks.”

It has been more than a year since Manipur was engulfed in the fire of violence, but peace has still not been restored there. The opposition has been constantly demanding from Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he should visit this northeastern state as soon as possible. Now the parties of the India Alliance in Manipur on Friday requested PM Modi to visit the violence-affected state as soon as possible, saying that only his direct participation and active engagement with the people here can restore peace.

A delegation of leaders of 10 political parties representing the India Alliance, while holding a press conference in Delhi, claimed that they were not allowed to protest at Jantar Mantar. Manipur Congress chief Meghchandra said, “We had to protest at Jantar Mantar, but the authorities rejected our request for permission. We have about 10 political parties participating.”

‘We are being deprived of our right’

He said, “It is unfortunate that we are being deprived of our right to protest. However, this setback will not stop us. Our protest will continue in different forms.” He also said that they have submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Modi with their demands.

Accusing the Centre of neglect, Meghchandra said, “Manipur is also a part of India, but why has the Central Government been so careless in the last 18 months? More than 60 thousand people are in relief camps and hundreds of people have lost their lives so far. How much more will we have to suffer?”

Manipur is being controlled by the Centre: Meghchandra

In the Manipur Assembly, the MLA said that the people of Manipur are demanding PM Modi to restore peace in the state. He also alleged, “The Manipur state government is being directly controlled by the Centre, the Chief Minister is working like a paper tiger. It seems that there is an undeclared President’s rule here. The Union Home Minister is directly controlling the situation in the state.”

Taking a dig at PM Modi, the Congress chief of Manipur said, “This is a clear example of the negligence of PM Modi and the central government, as the Prime Minister neither spoke on the current crisis in Manipur, nor visited the state, nor invited the representatives of the state for discussion.”

‘… then call the representatives in Delhi itself’

In their letter to the PM, the parties involved in the India Alliance of Manipur said, “We invite you (PM Modi) to visit Manipur on behalf of the people of the state and on behalf of India Alliance Manipur. This state has been embroiled in turmoil for almost two years since May 3 last year.”

The leaders of 10 parties requested PM Modi to visit Manipur as soon as possible before the end of the year. The letter said, “If you do not have time to come to Manipur before the end of the year 2024, then you are requested to meet all the political parties here at your office or your official residence. As the Prime Minister, your direct involvement is humbly requested as only your active participation along with the people of the state can bring peace and normalcy in this northeastern state.”
