Manipur: Firing on displaced families in Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai areas bordering Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, escalating tensions; 1 injured; people gripped by fear.

Fresh tensions have erupted in the restive state of Manipur following a shootout on Tuesday night in the outskirts of Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts. Officials said that multiple rounds of firing took place around 8:30 pm on Tuesday night near the Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai areas bordering Churachandpur district of Manipur. Some unidentified armed miscreants from the Churachandpur side attacked Torbung village, and security forces immediately retaliated.

Armed miscreants threw bombs
These unidentified armed miscreants also allegedly used bombs during the exchange of fire, which lasted for about 20 minutes. The fresh firing near the hilly areas has spread panic among the local residents.

One civilian injured in the attack
Officials also reported that one civilian was injured in the incident, although the identity of the injured person has not yet been ascertained. An official said, “We are trying to ascertain the cause and motive behind the firing. Additional security forces have been deployed to the spot as a precautionary measure. However, the situation in Torbung remains tense.” According to local residents of Phougakchao Ikhai and Torbung, approximately 389 displaced people from 67 families have been resettled in Torbung following government directives.

More than 260 people killed in Manipur violence
It may be noted that more than 260 people were killed and over 60,000 displaced in the violence that erupted in Manipur in 2023. To control this crisis, President’s Rule has been imposed in Manipur since February 13. However, the government has initiated the process of resettling the displaced people from Bishnupur district.
