Violence broke out between the Kuki-Meitei community in Manipur from May 2023. Since then, the government and the administration are trying to calm it down. In recent times, incidents of violence have reduced to a great extent. Meanwhile, on Sunday, the Meitei organization has demanded the central government to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state to identify illegal immigrants.

The Meitei group ‘Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity’ (COCOMI) demanded the central government to implement the NRC to identify illegal immigrants from Myanmar. The Meitei group also urged the government to complete the fencing work on the Indo-Myanmar border as soon as possible to prevent illegal entry into the state and smuggling of arms and drugs.

Kukis demand action against militants

The coordinator of the organization, Somendra Thokchom, said, ‘Despite the bomb blast in Kadangband earlier this month, the Center did not take any action. This shows that the people of the state are not being considered citizens of the country. Suspected militants had carried out a bomb blast in Kadangband area of ​​Imphal West district of Manipur on January 14.

Thokchom told reporters, “This conflict will end only when the Center takes concrete action and launches military action against the Kuki militants.” Several civil society organizations of Imphal Valley also demanded the government to take action against the Kuki militants to end the ongoing conflict in the state.

‘Smuggling from Myanmar is the main issue of conflict’
Thokchom said, “NRC should be implemented (in Manipur) to identify infiltrators. Refugee detention camps for Myanmar people should not be limited to Manipur only. The state has limited land resources. Camps should be set up in other states as well.’

He said that the Centre should complete the fencing work on the Myanmar border as soon as possible. So that infiltration as well as smuggling of arms and drugs from the neighbouring country can be stopped. Thokchom said, ‘Infiltration from Myanmar into Manipur, smuggling of arms and drugs remain the main issues of conflict in the state.’ He said that there has hardly been any improvement in the situation in the state
