Manipur: The bodies of six missing persons from Jiribam district are lying in the morgue of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam even after the completion of post-mortem as their family members are not ready to take them for last rites

The bodies of six people missing from Jiribam district of Manipur are lying in the morgue of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam even after the post-mortem is completed. Because their family members are not ready to take them for the last rites. According to sources, the sixth body was recovered from the Barak river in Cachar district of Assam on Monday, after which its post-mortem was done at SMCH.

A source related to this incident said that the post-mortem of all the six bodies has been done at SMCH. The concerned doctors have also prepared the report. However, the officer said that it could not be confirmed when the bodies would be taken to Manipur to hand over to their relatives for last rites.

Three women and three children missing

On November 11, there was an encounter between security forces and militants in Jiribam district of Manipur, in which 10 militants were killed. A few hours after the encounter, three women and three children living in the relief camp went missing.

Murder after kidnapping
The bodies of two women and a child were recovered from the Barak river in Assam’s Cachar district on Saturday, while the bodies of a woman and two children were found from the Jiri river in Jiribam on Friday night. It is alleged that the militants killed these people after kidnapping them. More than 220 people have been killed in ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities since May last year.

Major initiative of the Joint Action Committee

Meanwhile, officials said that the Joint Action Committee formed in Jiribam in response to the killing has decided to bring the bodies back from Silchar in Assam to their native villages in Manipur for the last rites.
