External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This is S. Jaishankar’s first meeting with Marco Rubio since the Donald Trump administration’s decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on India. The tariff decision has caused tension between the two countries. Jaishankar previously visited the US from June 30 to July 2 at Rubio’s invitation.

Trade talks begin

Both sides will seek to resolve differences and move towards a mutually beneficial trade agreement.

Relations between India and the United States have been on a steady decline in recent months. Relations between Delhi and Washington have been on a downward spiral since Donald Trump assumed office as US President in January this year. The strain in relations between the two countries began with Trump’s claim to mediate the military conflict between India and Pakistan from May 7 to 10. Trump claimed to have brokered a ceasefire, a claim India rejected.

The US has repeatedly targeted India for purchasing oil from Russia. Trump and US officials have used threatening language against India. Furthermore, the Trump administration imposed a hefty 50% tariff on Indian goods in August. Furthermore, the Trump administration’s recent decision on H-1B visas is also directly affecting Indians.
