The MCD ward committee election was held on Wednesday (September 4). Its final results have come out. This election was held on the orders of Delhi LG Vinay Kumar Saxena. On Tuesday, Mayor Shaili Oberoi had ordered not to hold elections today, but shortly after that, LG Vinay Saxena, using the powers obtained from the amended DMC Act, appointed the presiding officer for the election. He also instructed the MCD to conduct the election. If the election were held amid the dispute, it would be decided who will have the upper hand in the standing committee of the Delhi Municipal Corporation, which is considered the most powerful.
Although the Aam Aadmi Party has a majority in the Delhi Municipal Corporation, but the numbers in the ward committees are different in the 12 different zones of the corporation. In the MCD ward committee elections, 10 aldermen appointed by the LG can also vote, whose appointment right has been given to the Lieutenant Governor by the Supreme Court.
The special thing is that the Lieutenant Governor has appointed 10 aldermen in such ward committees where the Aam Aadmi Party had a slight majority. Apart from this, anti-defection laws are not applicable in MCD. In such a situation, Aam Aadmi Party fears that BJP may break some of their councillors. On 25th August, five councillors of AAP joined BJP. One of these councillors, Ram Chandra, returned to AAP four days later. In this context, out of the 12 ward committees of MCD, seven or eight committees can be captured by BJP.
If we look at the current situation of 12 zones of MCD, BJP has majority in seven zones and Aam Aadmi Party in five zones. BJP and Aam Aadmi Party are afraid of cross voting during the elections. This situation has arisen because apart from the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, the election of the Standing Committee is considered important in the Delhi Municipal Corporation. The party which holds the post of Chairman of the Standing Committee, has the real power in the corporation. There are 18 members in the Standing Committee. These are elected from 12 zones of the corporation. Six members are elected by the MCD House.
