Mehbooba Mufti: Mehbooba Mufti urged the Lieutenant Governor to release Doda MLA Mehraj Malik, who was detained in connection with the Hazratbal Dargah incident

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday (September 10) urged the Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha-led administration to release those detained in connection with the Hazratbal Dargah incident, including Doda MLA Mehraj Malik.

PIP president Mehbooba Mufti demanded the immediate withdrawal of Amirja in the Hazratbal and Doda MLA Maharaj case, saying that the case has been registered against the Doda MLA in connection with the Hazratbal incident. Mehbooba said that the Hazratbal incident took place and so far about 50 people are being investigated, which I think has been done to divert attention.

Doda MLA spoke on the use of abusive language

Doda MLA Maharaj Aamir, on visiting the PSA plant, said that it may be that the Doda MLA used some abusive language, but a PSA leader has told you that the Doda MLA has used some abusive language.

Mehbooba Mufti said, “I tell the Lieutenant Governor that the case against the people involved in the Hazratbal incident has been included and the leaders of the PSA has been removed so that the situation remains under control. Whatever it is, it cannot be done to divert attention from what happened in Doda, by making a supporter a scapegoat.”

‘PSA is not necessary for any public representative’

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mehbooba said that the use of Public Safety Act (PSA) against an elected representative was unfair. She said, “PSA is not necessary for any public representative, even if he has used some objectionable language against government officials. Such arrests weaken democracy and prevent people from expressing themselves.”

‘Detained only to divert attention’

Mehbooba alleged that the purpose of Mehraj Malik’s arrest was to divert public attention from the Hazratbal Dargah incident. She remarked, “The sitting MLA has been detained only to divert attention. This approach is not democratic.”

She further said that Jammu and Kashmir should take a lesson from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal, where, according to her, the ban on people’s voice had grave consequences.

Mehbooba said, “People’s voice is being suppressed in Jammu and Kashmir too. Attempts have been made to raise people’s voice there too, what happens we saw first in Sri Lanka, saw in Bangladesh and now it is being seen in Nepal.”
