Mehul Choksi, the prime accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, has been arrested in Belgium. Indian agencies have taken this action in collaboration with Belgium.

Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, one of the two main accused in the $2 billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, has been arrested in Belgium. This information has come to light quoting CBI sources. His arrest is being described as an important step in the years-long efforts to bring him to justice after he fled from India in 2018.

Sources said that Choksi was arrested on the request of the CBI. He has been located on bail by Indian agencies in Belgium. In fact, he fled from Antigua at the end of the year 2021. Indian investigative agencies were in touch with Belgian agencies for two months regarding this fugitive, after which this big action has been taken. Fugitive Choksi is currently in police custody. It is being said that he may seek bail citing poor health and other reasons.

Mehul Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused for their alleged role in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, where they are accused of defrauding the bank of more than Rs 13,850 crore. At the same time, a Mumbai court has issued two open-ended arrest warrants against Mehul Choksi. The first warrant was issued on 23 May 2018 and the second warrant on 15 June 2021. These warrants were issued in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.

Permission was sought to stay in Belgium

Earlier, the fugitive businessman had sought permission to stay in Belgium on 15 November 2023. He was living in Antigua and Barbuda before going to Belgium after fleeing India. His wife Preeti Choksi is a Belgian citizen. According to media reports, Mehul Choksi obtained ‘F Residency Card’ to stay in Belgium. However, he had submitted misleading and fabricated documents, including false information and forged papers, to the Belgian authorities in an attempt to obtain residency and avoid extradition to India.

It is also alleged that Mehul did not disclose his Indian and Antiguan citizenship. He had misrepresented his nationality during the application process. Sources also say that Mehul Choksi was allegedly planning to go to Switzerland for treatment at a famous cancer hospital.
