Abuja: 151 people have died so far due to the rapidly spreading meningitis disease in Nigeria. The health officials there are constantly struggling to control the outbreak of this disease. Most of the people who died from the disease were from remote parts of the northern region. The maximum number of children have been affected by the disease.
The first case was reported last year
The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has said that the disease was first reported in October last year. Now the situation is such that it has spread to 23 out of 36 states of Nigeria. Almost half i.e. 74 deaths from this disease have been recorded this year.
Deaths have occurred due to this reason
NCDC spokesperson Sani Datti said that most of the deaths due to this disease have occurred mainly due to the infected people not reaching the health centers on time or reaching late. Currently, this outbreak has affected Africa’s most populous country.
Health services are in a bad state
Health services in Nigeria are currently in a bad state. The crisis in Nigeria has worsened after US President Donald Trump’s administration cut US aid in February. Trump’s decree has affected not only Nigeria but many other African countries as well.
