UP SMARTMETER: Electricity department officials will reach door to door in Uttar Pradesh. A big campaign will start in the state from April 1. Meters will be changed in every house. Smart meters will be installed in their place. This campaign will be conducted on a war footing.
Preparations for the campaign have been completed. Officials say that after the installation of smart meters, electricity theft will be stopped to a great extent. Along with this, consumers will also get relief from frequently getting wrong bills. Consumers will pay only for the number of units of electricity they use. Overall, the process of electricity usage and payment will become completely transparent.
In UP, a target has been set to install smart meters in the homes of all consumers by 2025. The management of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation has directed the companies getting the tender to complete this work within the stipulated time. A senior official of Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation said that a campaign for this will be conducted on war footing from the middle of next month (March-2024) or from April 1. Under the campaign, 2.69 crore consumer meters, 15.26 lakh DT meters and about 20 thousand feeder meters are to be installed. The process of agreement for installation of meters with the executing agencies selected through tender has been completed. Installing such a large number of smart meters will cost approximately Rs 18885 crore.
Reader became a problem for nine thousand consumers
Nine thousand consumers of Gorakhpur zone are troubled due to wrong bills being generated by electricity readers. Regarding this, the Chief Engineer has sought clarification from the bill collecting company. Also instructions have been given to correct the bill. It is being told that meter readers are making bills by feeding more and sometimes less units without visiting the spot. Complaints about this are being received from all the sections of Gorakhpur zone. Consumers are facing problems in getting these bills corrected due to the carelessness of meter readers.
Last year, more than 11 thousand wrong bills were made in the zone. Even after complaining about this, most of the cases were not resolved. Consumers got their bills corrected on the basis of forced settlement. Gorakhpur Zone Chief Engineer Ashu Kalia said that cases of wrong bills of nine thousand consumers have come to light due to the mistake of meter readers. Clarification has been sought from the officials of the bill collecting company.
