Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has thanked world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for their “noble mission” to end the fighting between Ukraine and Russia. Putin said this on Thursday while commenting publicly for the first time on Ukraine’s ceasefire proposal. Putin confirmed on Thursday that Russia is ready to discuss a ceasefire, but its conditions should be clear.
‘Not interested in short-term ceasefire’
According to the news of ‘RT News’, Putin had said in July 2024 that Moscow is not interested in a short-term ceasefire, but is ready to address the causes of the conflict. He said, “Before I assess how I see Ukraine’s readiness for a ceasefire, I would first like to thank US President Trump for paying so much attention to resolving the conflict in Ukraine.”
What Putin said
Putin said, “We all have enough issues to deal with, but many heads of state, the President of China, the Prime Minister of India, the President of Brazil and the Republic of South Africa are spending their valuable time dealing with this issue. We are grateful to all of them.” Both Washington and Ukraine have supported a temporary 30-day ceasefire after a meeting between their respective delegations in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.
PM Modi has spoken to Putin several times
Prime Minister Modi has spoken to Putin as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky several times since the conflict began in Ukraine in February 2022. During a meeting with Trump at the White House last month, Prime Minister Modi had stressed that India has not adopted a ‘neutral’ stance in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The Prime Minister had said, “India is in favor of peace. I have already told President Putin that this is not the era of war. I support the efforts made by President Trump.”
